acne getting to the root

Getting to the root of acne

Acne is the result of problems with the sebaceous glands. These glands secrete an oily substance, called sebum that keeps skin naturally supple and healthy. When the opening to sebaceous glands is blocked, the sebum has nowhere to go and accumulates. This creates a recipe for disaster: The oil provides a feast for skin bacteria.

Unchecked, skin bacteria can lead to:

  • Pimples
  • Blackheads
  • Whiteheads
  • Large cysts
  • Painful swelling

acne basics

Acne basics

When new patients visit our practice, one of the first questions they ask is “Why do I have acne?” Many are ready to blame their painful, unattractive skin eruptions on chocolate or fried foods. Oil causes acne, but it’s not the French fries that are to blame!

Acne can be worsened by, though it is generally not caused by:

  • Diet
  • Stress
  • Cosmetics
  • Environmental pollution
  • Rubbing the skin

In fact, the two main causes of acne are:

  • Genetics
  • Hormones

acne new approach

A new approach in treating acne

Brisbane Skin is proud to offer this new generation of effective treatment for people with acne and acne scars. Our combination program is unlike traditional treatment protocols, using a range of treatments to improve the skin of acne sufferers.

We place equal focus on:

  • Treating acne
  • Treating and preventing scars

Research has shown that scars that are treated early have a higher improvement rate than those that are not. Advanced technology allows our dermatologists to undertake scar remodelling early, giving our patients the best chance for optimal results.

Types of Acne

Normal Skin

Normal hair follicles need to be kept clean, with a constant turnover of the outer skin layer to keep the skin healthy.

We always recommend a good wash and moisturiser, which are different for each skin type. Read more about cleansers here.

We also recommend Vitamin C in the morning and A in the evening to keep skin healthy and promote continuous turnover of cells at the surface.

Maintenance peel and light treatments are also helpful as we get older to keep the skin in good health.

White Heads

Whiteheads are inflammation under the skin which are not open to the surface. They should not be picked as that will damage your skin and leave scarring!

Treatment options include good skin care with active ingredients, peels, light treatments, topical creams and antibiotics depending upon the severity of your condition and your personal circumstances.

Blackheads

Blackheads are pores that are open to the surface of your skin that collect dirt from the air. They should not be picked as that will damage your skin and leave scarring!

Treatment options include extraction of the blackhead followed by good skin care with active ingredients, peels and light treatments.

Mild to Moderate Acne

More pimples appearing means the acne causing bacteria are multiplying and need to be brought into check.  Treatment options include good skin care with active ingredients in high concentration, combined with topical prescription or antibiotics for a short period until the bacteria is gone.

Alternatives include a series of peel and light treatments which can provide excellent clearance depending upon how advanced the acne is to start with. We always recommend a complimentary consult with a nurse or therapist who will be able to advise you regarding the suitability of this program.

Advanced Acne

We love to treat severe acne as the results we obtain are life changing, bringing clear, beautiful skin back to life.

Treatment options include prescription and non prescription options. We recommend oral specialist prescriptions with non-commodogenic skin care with NO active ingredients and concurrent scar treatments. Alternatively, a new biophotonic treatment combines gel and light treatments for non-prescription treatment of severe acne.

Acne Causes

Genetics

Genes determine how your body’s autoimmune system will respond to skin bacteria. Furthermore, your body’s genetic programming can influence things such as how prone you are to having clogged pores. For example, a hereditary tendency to produce more dead skin cells than your skin can shed, and a tendency to form clogged pores, can lead to acne.

Hormones

Beyond genetics, your hormones influence the rate at which you produce oil within your sebaceous glands. Hormonal balances fluctuate throughout life, but may be dramatic during puberty. This explains why so many patients that see us at Brisbane Skin are teenagers of both genders.

Females experience hormonal fluctuations related to their menstrual cycle, pregnancy, the post-partum state, perimenopause, and menopause. As a result, many women are challenged by acne and acne scarring well into adulthood.

Males also experience hormonal fluctuations, though most of them occur during puberty. At that time, males experience a surge in androgens, the male sex hormone. These hormones, along with adolescent stress, cause the oil glands in teenage boy’s skin on the face, back, neck, chest, and shoulders to enlarge and produce more oil.

Acne is not a serious health threat, but it can cause deep scars, physically and emotionally. The medical team at Brisbane Skin do their utmost to help patients cope.

Acne Treatments

Diet

Being mindful of your diet is important for all types of acne.

Skin Care

We have two types of skin care regimes that we recommend.

  1. Firstly, for those on most treatments, our dermatologists recommend Obagi clenziderm active range which includes an active cleanser, pore therapy and moisturiser to assist with clearing your acne.
  2. Secondly, for those on prescription medication our dermatologists recommend a very gentle non commodonogenic range of Obagi which includes a gentle cleanser and moisturiser as well as a sunscreen and lip balm.

Both of these ranges are only available through doctors rooms and will need a complimentary consultation prior to starting with this highly effective skin care.

Peels

Chemical peels are a good way to clear out dead skin cells, turn over your outer skin layer, promote skin health and keep your skin clear.

Our dermatologists recommend regular peels and often in combination with light treatments.

Light Treatments

A great way to combat bacteria, we use light treatment in combination with peels to fight the cause – bacteria – at the same time as promoting skin turnover.

Topical Creams

Having a topical cream handy can really be a life saver when small pimples raise their heads.

Our dermatologists can prescribe excellent topical creams to keep up your sleeve!

Injections for Emergencies

Perfect for your social calendar emergencies, our dermatologists can settle your skin when you wake up with that unwanted pimple on your face!

Antibiotics

A very fast and effective treatment for pimples and mild acne is a course of antibiotics, which will fight the acne causing bacteria.

Our dermatologists often combine this with a series of peel and light treatments for the best results.

BioPhotonic Treatments

This new technology is a great way to treat moderate to severe acne for those patients who do not wish to use prescriptions.

Light activated gel targets the acne bacteria over a six week treatment course.

Kleresca BioPhotonic Treatments

The latest technology is biophotonic Kleresca treatment which uses light activated gel to treat acne.

Kleresca blue light treatments offer treatment of acne through a non-invasive, non-medicated blue light therapy which is a good option for patients who do not wish to follow prescription options.
