Rosacea and acne rosacea are common inflammatory skin disorders that affect the face. Rosacea is a common chronic inflammatory condition usually affecting the face, but occasionally extending to areas such as the neck and chest. Thankfully there are rosacea treatment options to help!

About Rosacea

What are the symptoms?

Common rosacea symptoms include:

  • Extremely sensitive facial skin, often irritated by products, cosmetics and sunscreens
  • A tendency to blush and flush
  • Fixed facial redness, especially across the nose, cheeks, chin and central forehead
  • Enlarged capillaries (telangiectasia)
  • Yellow-headed pimples and pustules on the forehead, cheeks and chin
  • Non-tender lumps under the skin
  • Thickening of the skin of the nose (rhinophyma)

Who is affected by rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin problem here in Australia, and one that we treat often at Brisbane Skin. It’s an equal opportunity skin disorder that can affect anyone at any time, but you are more susceptible to rosacea if you:

  • Are female
  • Are fair-skinned
  • Age over 30 and under 60 years of age
  • Have a family history of rosacea and facial redness
  • There are few statistics on the disorder as it is often mistaken for an allergic reaction, acne, or another type of skin problem. If this condition is left untreated, rosacea will worsen over time.

What are the causes of rosacea?

The cause of rosacea is unknown, and there is no permanent cure.

Substances or activities that increase blood flow to the surface of the skin can trigger an outbreak of rosacea or aggravate its symptoms. These factors can be problematic with regard to rosacea and facial redness:

  • Spicy foods
  • Alcohol
  • Hot beverages
  • Extreme temperatures
  • Exposure to sunlight
  • Anger
  • Stress
  • Embarrassment
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Hot baths
  •  Saunas
  • Corticosteroids
  • Drugs that dilate blood vessels
  • Blood pressure medications

Fortunately, while the reason for this common skin disorder is being debated, the skin specialists at Brisbane Skin are experienced in a variety of treatments that can lessen its unpleasant symptoms.

Treatments for rosacea

How can you treat rosacea?

Rosacea affects different people in different ways, and each patient we see at Brisbane Skin receives a custom treatment plan based on his/her individual needs. While some patients are uncomfortable with the redness and flushing, others want to get rid of bumps and pimples.

Oral and topical therapies may be all that is needed to reduce symptoms of rosacea. For more stubborn cases of rosacea and facial redness, laser and pulsed light treatments can be used to:

  • Remove visible blood vessels
  • Reduce extensive redness
  • Correct disfigurement of the nose

The laser suite at Brisbane Skin offers a variety of solutions for our patients. We utilise the Cynosure Cynergy Pulsed-Dye laser vessels and redness. For rhinophyma, treatment is performed with a combination of the Sciton Erbium:YAG and the Syneron CORE CO2 lasers.
