Spider Veins

Why Consider Treating Spider Veins?

Sclerotherapy is the medical term for a highly effective treatment that targets what most people commonly known as spider veins. Unwanted leg veins, known medically as telangiectasias, are dilated skin capillaries. These may become visible with time and may also lead to a dull aching of the legs after prolonged standing.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION:

Sclerotherapy risks include allergic reactions, skin discoloration, bruising, blood clots, ulceration at injection sites, and treatment failure. Some patients may experience permanent skin staining. Not suitable for all vein types.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Sclerotherapy is the technique of instilling a specific solution into these vessels (tiny capillaries) using a small needle.

Dr Watson uses Fibrovein, a proven concentrated salt solution that works as a gentle sclerosing agent to effectively collapse treated veins, allowing them to gradually fade and disappear over time. Patients may experience mild, temporary sensations during treatment – a normal part of the process that indicates the solution is working effectively. As an added convenience, compression stockings are not required after your treatment, making this a simple and straightforward procedure.

Treatment Goals: Several injections may be needed for a specific area of telangiectasia. The goal is to produce a 75% to 90% improvement. Results of vein treatment cannot be guaranteed, but most patients are very pleased with the cosmetic and functional improvement.

Treatment Timeline and Expectations

How Soon Will the Leg Veins Disappear?

Each vessel usually requires two to three treatments, spaced 6 weeks apart. The vessels disappear over a period of two weeks to three months. Fading of the vessels is a slow process which takes one to six months. Recurrences may rarely occur over a period of one to five years. This treatment does not prevent new telangiectasia from developing.

Treatment Frequency

The same area should not be injected for six to eight weeks to allow for complete healing. Different areas may be treated sooner. It usually takes two to three injections to obliterate any vessels and 10 to 40 vessels may be treated in any one session.

What are the causes of spider veins?
  • Family History
  • Age
  • Obesity
  • Lack of mobility
  • Previous venous thrombosis or leg injury
  • Occupations that involve a lot of standing
  • Female hormones associated with puberty, pregnancy and menopause.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sclerotherapy

A: Yes. They are the type of vessels which occur in a mat of very fine radiating vessels.

Q: How often can I be treated with sclerotherapy?

A: The same area should not be injected for six to eight weeks to allow for complete healing. Different areas may be treated sooner.

Q: How many times does sclerotherapy have to be done?

A: This varies with the number of areas that must be injected, as well as the response to each injection. It usually takes two to three injections to obliterate any vessels and 10 to 40 vessels may be treated in any one session.

Q: What types of veins won’t Dr Watson treat?

A: Dr Watson only treats cosmetic spider veins and telangiectasia – the small pink, purple, red, or blue superficial veins visible on the skin surface. Dr Watson does not inject varicose veins. If veins are painful or bulging, Dr Watson does not treat them with injection therapy.
